Located in the heart of Syros, the capital of the Cyclades Islands, Chimera Art & Craft will take you on a Greek summer experience. The sun-kissed colours, the Mediterranean tastes and deep blue are all expressed into the shop's selection of delicate objects. Opened in May 2020, the gallery’s sole purpose is to promote Greek art and craftsmanship. Materials handcrafted by the represented artisans include wood, metal, paper or silk. With a particular focus on ceramics, the shop displays a great variety of artworks, including pottery by the famous Lembesi family from Sifnos and ceramic sculptures by Helen Mudie Ioannidou. Chimera Art & Craft also hosts temporary exhibitions of Greek ceramicists and painters.

Olgianna Melissinos’ unique shop is located in the old town of Athens, in the district of Monastiraki. The classic leather sandal appears in various forms, reflecting the simple and raw lines of Ancient Greek footwear. Bags and belts match the shoes. In the back of the shop is hidden a small atelier, where sandals are assembled and fitted. This final step allows the artisan to adjust perfectly the sandals to customers' feet. It is also an invitation to discover and enjoy the ultimate part of the handcrafting making process. Moreover, the client can personalise their pair by choosing the  colour of the strap and sole.

Located on the island of Tinos, in an old coffee shop, Trela is a gallery designed by Carol Guinebert. As an art lover and antique collector, the Frenchwoman brings her passions together in Trela. Established in 2018, the gallery features a fine selection of antique pieces and contemporary items. Typical tavern tables, ancient vases converse with modern objects by French and Greek designers. Works of ceramicists Katerina Latoufi or Kalou Dubus, hand blown glasses from La Soufflerie, textile creations by Martine Persault are just a glimpse of the collection. Trela subtly connects the two cultures.

Opened in 2014, on the charming island of Serifos, Kerameio shop features a great collection of handmade pottery. Stoneware, earthenware, ovenware, the everyday objects displayed are shaped in a pure and modern design, reflecting the warm atmosphere of the Aegean. The shop's selection includes ceramics made by traditional Greek families and contemporary pottery crafted by Greek artists. In addition, jewellery and sculptures created by Natassa Kalogeropoulou are showcased. The ceramicist and co-founder of Kerameio works in the atelier linked to the shop. During the Summer, workshops are organised for all visitors who wish to experiment the art of pottery.

The Museum shop gives visitors the opportunity to buy various pottery objects made by local craftsmen. Handmade plates delicately painted, classic vases, cups, and many useful articles are on display. Alongside the traditional collection, works of contemporary and emerging ceramicists are presented, complementing the variety of the assortment. In addition to the objects exhibited, a great collection of books including publications of the Centre for the Study of Modern Pottery, documentation on the history of traditional pottery, research studies, as well as a selection of children’s illustrated books are available to purchase.

Homo Faber Guide is a signature project developed by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, an international non-profit organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland, which was set up in 2016 thanks to the intuition of Franco Cologni and Johann Rupert. The Michelangelo Foundation’s mission is to celebrate and preserve master craftsmanship, and for this reason it has created a map of the most significant representatives in this field, with the aim of connecting all its protagonists: artisans, designers, gallery owners, art curators, collectors and enthusiasts of high-quality handmade pieces.

About the Guide

Are you an artisan, atelier or manufacturer? Would you like to be featured in Homo Faber Guide? The Michelangelo Foundation encourages self-assessment initiatives and is pleased to evaluate new members to appear on the Guide or in other projects. Thanks to the Master’s Touch Evaluation Tool, every artisan can send their application: register and access a questionnaire to see if you fulfill the 11 criteria for excellence that stand behind all the activities of the Michelangelo Foundation. If your answers reach the minimum requirement, your application will be brought to our attention; if, on the contrary, you should score below the minimum requirement, we will give you some points for improvement, in the hope that you may participate in future initiatives of the Michelangelo Foundation.

This is in keeping with one of the key values of the Michelangelo Foundation: the transmission of knowledge in craftsmanship.

A rising star is an artisan who has been active for less than ten years, and who is capable of expressing his or her craft with competence, creativity and originality. Whether self-taught or trained, the rising star represents the future of craftsmanship, in creativity, concerns and approaches.

Who is a Rising star?

The artisans featured in Homo Faber Guide have been selected through a meticulous assessment process based on the 11 criteria for excellence, identified by Alberto Cavalli, Executive Director of the Michelangelo Foundation, in the volume The Master’s Touch, written with researchers Giuditta Comerci and Giovanna Marchello. The members of the Michelangelo Foundation’s network who have been invited to participate in sourcing artisans for the Guide use an evaluation tool based on these criteria. In this way, they can identify the most suitable artisans to include in the project.
