When patience pays off
- Jennifer loves the purity of unglazed porcelain
- Abstract painter Agnes Martin is an inspiration
- She considers craftsmanship 'important for the soul'
Jennifer Hickey always wanted to make things with her hands. Brought up in a family fascinated by fashion, she went to art college in her native Dublin with a view to exploring textiles. But during the course she was introduced to ceramics and simply “fell for it”. She particularly loved the ethereal properties of porcelain, and has used it ever since. Jennifer now makes sculptures inspired by the detail inherent in the natural world around her. Each takes months to make, being comprised of hundreds or thousands of individual elements, sewn together with translucent thread, a process that takes delicacy, discipline and endless patience.
Interview
How does nature inspire you?
I’m very interested in detail, and drawn to things that are overlooked in the natural world. I hone in on aspects in nature and break it down. I work from a small garden studio in Dublin and my garden is a constant source of inspiration. I spend a lot of my time in plant nurseries, too, getting ideas.
What is your making process like?
I am obsessed with notebooks so I collect a lot of imagery and I write. I do a lot of quick sketches, but nothing detailed. I have a brief idea of the piece and then as I make, it evolves. I love working very slowly, and process and time are very central aspects of my practice.
What appeals about the repetitive nature of your work?
I think it’s because you go into a meditative state. You forget about what is happening in your every day and it takes you to a different place. I go into a different zone, and it gives me time to think.
What do you love most about what you do?
There’s nothing else that I have ever wanted to do, and I think that just drives me on, it’s like a compulsion to make. I can never get away from it, I constantly think about it. It’s quite special to be able to do that.
